Katharine  Brown, PH.D.

Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice & Legal Studies 

Katharine L. Brown is an assistant professor in the Department of Criminal Justice and Legal Studies. She earned her Ph.D. (2023) and M.S. (2019) in Criminology and Criminal Justice from Arizona State University and B.A. (2017) in Sociology from the University of California, San Diego. Katharine employs mixed methods, community engagement, and collaboration with practitioners to advance the knowledge and use of evidence-based practice in the criminal justice system. Specifically, she studies experiences with homelessness
and gender/sex to inform techniques that improve policing tactics and strategies that can enhance the likeliness of prosocial outcomes among practitioners and community members. Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation and has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Experimental Criminology, Policing: An International Journal, and Behavioral Sciences & the Law. 

Gender Studies -Related Research Interests:  Women and policing; women and crime; intersectionality and the criminal justice system; retention and promotion among policewomen; gender representation in law enforcement
