Scott Barretta, M.A.
Lecturer in Sociology and Anthropology
A native of Virginia, Scott Barretta arrived at UM in 1999 to edit Living Blues magazine, for which he is still a regular contributor, and in 2002 began teaching courses including Anthropology of Blues Culture. He was on the team that created the B.B. King Museum & Delta Interpretive Center, and has worked as a writer/researcher on the Mississippi Blues Trail since its inception in 2006. He has written on music extensively as a journalist and in academic publications, is the longtime host of Highway 61 radio on Mississippi Public Broadcasting, and was a co-producer of the Emmy-nominated documentary film "Shake 'em On Down" about bluesman Mississippi Fred McDowell. He received a Mississippi Governor's Award for the Arts in 2016 and a Citation of Merit from the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters in 2022
